She offered me a taste. I looked around the room of that very famous Philadelphia restaurant and noticed something peculiar to a 5 year old.
Only the heaviest patrons were having the cottage cheese platter.
“No thanks, Grandma, cottage cheese makes you fat !”
My mother was embarrassed, Grandma had little to say, it was a childhood moment that I remember so vividly.
It was the go-to diet food of the 1950’s and 60’s and a very common luncheon plate that didn’t seem to be working for many.
I don’t think I went near that stuff for most of my life; never a fan.
Now, it is one of my favorite summer breakfast foods, paired with seasonal fruit. For me, it starts in Spring with strawberries, then melons, especially cantaloupe. This month, it is all about fresh peaches, nectarines and the imported mango and kiwi.
I use about a half cup of cottage cheese, with salt and ground black pepper to provide the contrast to sweet, and a side of grilled pita bread, done on my gas range in less than a minute.
It provides protein, carbs, fiber and energizes my morning. Perfect.
My mother and grandmother must be smiling somewhere.
Sounds a wonderful breakfast Van 🙂
I’ll be back to my eggs and bacon by fall. Thanks, Judy. ☺
Smart ladies, but you’re right about bacon and almost anything else…:)
Bacon..it goes with…life ! ☺ I have it often for lunch or dinner.
You’re my kind of person..:)
I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like bacon, George, just sayin’.I think it’s genetic..my family used to have a smokehouse, and we always had slabs of bacon cut thick..one piece was a serving. ☺
Love cottage cheese and fruit!
And the in-season choices have so much juice..☺
That is hilarious – little kids are so honest. I am a fan of cottage cheese and fruit especially for a breakfast change. 😄
My daughter said something similar to her grandmother…I guess she got it honestly. ☺ Thanks, Amy.
I love cottage cheese and I love to mix it with fruit and walnuts. It really one of those foods that give you the most bang for your buck.
Good call on the walnuts…extra nutrition ! I have some in the freezer…thanks for the tip, John. ☺
You’re welcome. For some reason the texture of chopped walnuts goes really well with cottage cheese.
☺
I’ve never really developed a taste for the stuff. However, I confess that for some reason, that sounds really good.
I often use cinnamon on everything to blend the flavors…especially good with peaches. Give it a try, Paul.
I think I will. Thanks Van.
My pleasure. ☺
Cottage cheese is on my very short list of food I miss due to not being able to tolerate dairy. When my gut heals, cottage cheese is on a short list of the first foods I’ll eat…with cantaloupe, YUM!
So sorry, Angie, I’d really miss dairy.
No kidding! And no worries. Prior to this dairy limit, I ate enough cheese for two lifetimes 😉
Can you tolerate gluten?
I’m off dairy, gluten, and eggs. Feeling much better! Thank goodness I’m not celiac or extremely allergic so I don’t have to worry about cross-contamination.
There seems to be a lot more items available now in the mainstream markets to meet those needs….expensive, but available. ☺ You have my sympathy.
True! I’m very fortunate 😀 I’m having a ton of fun finding creative ways to continue my foodie ways while also feeling better. Thumbs up!
What an observant child! Cracked me up. I love cottage cheese with fruit. I never thought to put salt and pepper on it. I’ll have to try that. 🙂
Observant and unedited…I’m sure I was a handful, Diana. I usually prefer savory tastes to sweet, so the S&P provides some balance. ☺
Cottage cheese is quite versatile. Those were also the days of cottage cheese/Jell-O concoctions. Did you avoid those, too? 😉
There was always “room for Jell-O”! But never put anything in it…not even fruit. I had my standards. ☺
I would have never thought of that!
You’re welcome. ☺
I love cottage cheese with pineapple, but I can’t wait to get back to my porridge once the Autumn really sets in, Van. Sweet or salty porridge? Has to be sweet for me all the time, just like with my popcorn.
I’ve never been sure, Hugh, is porridge any different than oatmeal ? I like mine with a lot of cinnamon. Most foods, though, I lean toward savory, even spicy as my tastes have changed a lot over the (maturing) years. ☺ Popcorn…salt, butter and dill for me.
Hi Van, oatmeal is the same as porridge. I usually make mine with skimmed milk, although many people also use water. I find it fills you up and keeps you going until lunchtime. I usually have blueberries on mine but, as a real treat, I also like a little golden syrup on it. I can feel my waistline expanding with just the thought.
Okay then, thanks. I use half milk/half water and add cinnamon, berries, and sliced almonds. Sustains me a long while. ☺
I enjoy it as a side now, too, Van. I think cottage cheese is a good you have to grow into!
