Why do men get to have pockets in their pajamas ?

A simple, but important question on a Saturday morning in winter.

I found out many years ago that there is a huge disparity in the quality of garments made for men vs. women.

There was a time that I was buying a lot of gifts for teenage boys in the family.

I usually bought too many, and some that I liked, I kept for myself.

Years later, those men’s sweaters are still in great shape; no pilling, no torn fibers, colorfast, blocking still intact.

I can’t say the same for some equivalent women’s wear.

The same for socks. I bought some men’s white crews, by mistake, which have outlasted any “made for women” socks.

The tailor-made, unisex khakis that I once wore for work are now decades old, and still look like new.

The same goes for some designer shirts that I acquired when my son went to generic, non-label attire. Like new.

I once asked someone I knew in the industry why there is such a variance in quality. The answer…

“women change their mind and their fashion so very often; they don’t have to be made to last. “

Seriously.

A few years ago, I bought a pair of navy blue thermal men’s lounge pants. They are warm, comfy, durable and were half the cost.

And, they have pockets.

pockets to keep your hands warm

  2. Pockets in pajamas? To put hands in when we stand of course!

  3. Erika Kind says:

LOL… what an answer! Haha… I love your ponderings on a Saturday winter morning, Van!

  4. I had to laugh and to agree with you Van!!

  5. George says:

Deep pockets, too..:) And do t get started on the disparity when it comes to dry cleaning clothes and how much more expensive it is for women.

  6. Val Boyko says:

    Love this pondering Van!
I guess you are more of a quality vs quantity and comfort vs fashion kind of woman! I’m with you on this, and agree that men’s clothes last longer.

  7. I’ve noticed all that, too. I don’t know why they can’t make good quality, long-lasting clothes (with pockets) for those of us women who don’t change our wardrobes every couple of years.

  8. They make them cheaper to get us to spend more!

  9. Judy Martin says:

It is very unfair that women’s garments are of inferior quality! I like pockets in pyjamas too, why can’t we have some?!!

    You’re not kidding! >.<
I tell you what, I could rant about this for days. My own examples include:
my 'garden shirts' which are my husband's former work shirts. Button ups and oxfords that haven't gone to work in 7-15 years. I wear them to garden, including to drag branches. You'd never know how old they are.
my son's old socks which I wear around the house ALL THE TIME, for they are warm and soft and they are no less than 12 years old as I have had them since he outgrew them and Sissy didn't want them.
my former boyfriend's sweater, which I took over in 1990. I'm not kidding.
a barn jacket, from the late 90's, given to me by one of my roommates to make up for some lack of rent.
Now and again, I'll buy some vintage women's wear, because it seems like women's clothing USED TO be made every bit as well!

    • Wow…you build my case with all that, Joey. And I know that you’re not kidding. Thanks. Vintage did seem to be better constructed…or were they ??☺ Maybe it’s just as compared to what we get today. sigh….

Van, I’m with your on men’s PJs better than women! I buy mens all the time! Think you’ve got a point on mens cloths better made. Not sure if brand names count here. I have long lasting good luck with Ralph Lauren jeans, jackets and tops. I wait for the sales! In retirement, not doing much clothes shopping so don’t know about overall quality! Happy Saturday! 💛Elizabeth

Need pockets (even in PJs) for wallet, keys and phone. Sometimes ya just don’t feel like changing…😁

Even if my wife’s pants (any kind) had a pocket, she wouldn’t put anything in it. Why? Beats the hell out of me.

  14. Why do men’s haircuts cost less? Why do men’s personal hygiene products cost less? I think women are willing to pay more for what they want and men are not. What do you think? ❤

  15. I used to wear a Levis’ shirt that one of my sons was given for Christmas and soon outgrew. It lasted so many years, I finally got tired of wearing it and gave it away to charity.

  16. Yes! I have taken to buying some men’s clothes for myself – hoodies, socks – for just this reason. Socks in particular are ridiculous in that pairs for ladies maybe last me a year but my men’s pairs last me years and years. Also, pockets. Yes. It’s annoying that more women’s clothes either have no pockets or too shallow pockets. I don’t want to have to carry a bag with me just because I need somewhere to stow my keys and phone. That’s one of the reasons my daily uniform is jeans.

    • The shallow pockets…you’re so right, Laura. just enough for a Kleenex ? I wear a lanier for my keys, and often mistaken for an employee in retail stores. (I don’t challenge it…if I know where an item is…I direct them.) Jeans work for me. And sometimes, cargo pants or shorts with multiple zippered pockets. ☺

  17. This is something I have moaned about for ages! Why no pockets? So annoying. I need somewhere to keep a tissue in cold and flu season. Also, why don’t women’s coats have an inside pocket? I think it would be really useful.

  18. I think it goes very much by how much you pay for an item as to how long it will last, Van. I’ve always been a great believer in this. I’ve purchased shirts from a well-known bargain clothing store here in the UK that, after the first wash, lose their colour and shape. I end up never wearing the items again. Then I buy shirts from a well know label and pay extra and end up getting plenty of wear from them. They seem to last for a much longer time and probably save me money by buying them rather than the less expensive bargain clothing.
As for your question about pajamas, I’m afraid I can’t help as I don’t wear any. Does beg the question why there are pockets in some men’s boxer shorts, though?

    • Agree on the $/quality thing, Hugh, but it doesn’t hold up as well for women’s garments. As for the pockets in boxer shorts…Do you have the equivalent of Walmart there ? Pretty much, anything can be outdoor attire. ☺ Thanks.

      • We probably do, but when boxers have a button fly I kinda think they should never be shown in public. 😳 However, maybe I’m not up with the fashion of the day? I still don’t understand why some younger guys wear jeans that come halfway down their behinds. I want to go up to them and offer them a belt or pull the waist of the trousers up.

  19. TanGental says:

My wife’s PJs – female – have pockets so maybe the UK is more advanced!! what is shocking is differential pricing; there’s a scandal over here – women’s razors cost more than men’s, we have tax on sanitary products for women – the Tampon Tax as protestors call it. It’s discrimination in so many subtle and still unsubtle ways that bugs the hell out of me. Great post and yet anther example of this insidious example of the unremitting influence of the patriarchy!!

    • The patriarchy…unremitting is a great word for it, Geoff. The Tampon tax…cracked me up a bit. Glad your wife’s PJ’s show some progress…maybe there is hope for us. 💖

I love pockets but men’s pants never seem to fit me right. DaMN hips!! Lol

  21. Women’s pajamas don’t need pockets because women should never leave the house. OBVIOUSLY.

  22. So our clothes are cheaply made on purpose! My clothes tend to last longer than my husbands, but he’s tough on clothes. That said, my nephew was wearing his dad’s suit last weekend and it looked like new even though it was 40 years old!

  23. Pockets in pyjamas are essential. I once bought a pair of pyjama pants and then promptly got rid of them when I discovered they had no pockets.

  24. Thanks for following my blog. What a pleasure to have you!

  25. writerinsoul says:

My lady jammies have pockets! Yay! (They are on the top, not the pants.) Nicely written post.

  26. Laura says:

What I really want to know is why do men get real, useful, FUNCTIONAL pockets in pants? All I get are decorative, dainty, won’t-hold-anything-bigger-than-a-paper-clip pockets. Heaven forbid I don’t want to take a purse somewhere…bless if I’m stuck with nowhere to put my car keys and a chapstick!

  27. nimi naren says:

    Hmmm…very interesting

  28. It is, isn’t it ? Thanks, Nimi. ❤️

  29. BunKaryudo says:

Until you mentioned it, I’d never really noticed that women’s pajamas don’t have pockets. (I never wear women’s pajamas.) 🙂
