Chair

The year our first child was born, we purchased two La-Z-Boy recliners, done in a warm, salmon-colored fabric.

That was 1983.

We still have one.

It has become my version of the Archie Bunker chair, from the 1970’s sitcom All in the Family.

I honestly tried to give them away. When they became young adults, my children each received one of them.

We went about finding replacements. My husband chose a brown leather piece that still works for him.

I picked a chair/ottoman combination, in a color scheme that better fit my family room décor.

I pretty much hated it.

My daughter still has her chair. It is, of course, my favorite place to sit when I visit her.

Like me, she finds it incredibly relaxing.

Like me, she is known to fall asleep every time she settles into it.

We call it the “Ambien Chair.”

A few years ago, I found out that my son was not really using his.

He gave it back to me, saying he didn’t have room for it anymore.

I took it back. Willingly.

It is still structurally sound. It could be reupholstered.

It is worn with my very particular body imprint.

It fits me . Like a glove.

But, it is almost 33 years old. It might be time to let go.

Now, I am seriously looking to replace it.

It’s not going well.

  1. Happy hunting. I learned to spell furniture when I was a kid and my parents left us in the car while they shopped. Oh my!

Oh goodness. The sadness of losing one’s favorite chair. Reminds me a bit of Martin Crane on Frasier, you know? I’d have it refurbished. Of course, the upholsterer’s shop is literally within walking distance of me, so I have the advantage, but still, if you have it done, you may get another 33 years of comfort out of it.
    Ambien chair, lol 🙂

  3. Hmm. I have mixed feelings about letting go of such furniture. It feels as if you are sending a family member out of the house 😉 I hope she finds good loving body that will appreciate her age and good service.

  4. I had two recliners haha and loved them! Such memories of a lovely time. how about reupholstering it? Love this Van!

  5. I vote for reupholstering. Or if that’s too expensive, buy a nice slip cover or throw a pretty comforter over it.

That was when they made furniture to last. Do you really have to get rid of it? Do you have a spare corner somewhere?

Van, those are the best kind of chairs!! It takes time to get furniture to the point it feels like an extension of you. I have a wooden rocking chair that belonged to my hubby’s grandmother …. now we are talking OLD … which I cherish and LOVE. Because it is wood it has no imprints of my body but I can “feel” me in that chair now because I use it so much. You couldn’t pay me enough to throw that chair away. ❤

    • My brother has the roll-back sofa and chair that my grandparents had on the farm in the 1920’s. It has been re-covered many times, and is amazingly sturdy. The upholsterer folks always underestimate the amount of work it takes to cover them. ☺

And this is the brother who doesn’t like this sofa? Really? If I were you I would take it back. No wait. He doesn’t have room? Sorry, I’ve read so many blogs today, so am a bit confused at this point. Tee hee …. I really did read your post. Honest. LOL

      • No, my brother is proud to have it, and to keep it in the family. It’s my son who didn’t have room for my favorite chair…so he gave it back to me. ☺

Oh … got it. Van, just too much today. I think I am calling it quits for the day.

I never had a favorite chair. We always only had sofas. I would love to have one. No room for it at the moment. But who knows…. I would take yours… lol!

  9. Great post. So understand VAn.

You know it’s impossible to replace, right?. ..:)
I have a rocker recliner that’s almost as old and even though it’s not in a useable location at the moment, it’s not going near the front door.
One day it’ll make its return. Until then…..

Sever the connection quickly so the pain doesn’t linger! Kinda like ripping a bandaid off quickly.

    😉

  12. Hi Van
Check out The Restless Chair, their are many styles. Fit like a glove and will age beautifully. I had to give him my Herman Miller desk chair, the Aeron. I got the better deal. Stacy’s Furniture sells them. Good luck in your search.
    Have a great day.
    🙂

  13. Sometimes, even chairs and tables become a part of the family, it’s not an easy job to let them go… 🙂 So many memories are attached with them…

By the way, I came to know of your blog from Lynn, glad to be here… 🙂

  14. I spend a lot of my day on my butt, Van. A comfortable chair is key. I’d vote for reupholstery 🙂

Nooooo Keep it! We bought a three piece suite in 1982 when we bought our first flat – brown velour, a two man settee and two wing backed armchairs. The springs poke out the bottom the studs are a little loose but we have all three pieces and the two piece sits in the sewing room (once a playroom, once a study – things move on) and we watch TV sometimes and debrief the day with the dog between us. Couldn’t let it go. Not now.

  16. I vote for you to keep the chair. Especially, since it “fits like a glove” and carries “your body imprint.”

  17. Ah, looks SO inviting. But yeah, that is an awfully long time to have had it.
