“A little seltzer down your pants.”
She made us laugh and cry, at the same time. But mostly, she left us smiling.
In the words of the character Lou Grant, from the most lauded episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show…
โDeath is such a big, scary concept that you have to laugh at it, lest you give it all of your power.โ
Mary Tyler Moore. 1936-2017.
Thanks 2017. You’re following all to familiarily the terribleness that was 2016.
I hope it’s not a tragic trend, but so many of our favorites are aging…part of life. Thanks, Anthony.
Ah, Van, I always get my obituary news from you. ๐
So sorry, Julie. It seems our icons are leaving us. Being of a certain age, many of us entered our adult years with MTM. She left an impression that endures. ๐
It’s ok, Van. I wouldn’t know about this if it weren’t for you, because I avoid the media, so I’m grateful to you.
ok then. By the way, I love your gravatar pic.
Thanks. ๐It’s an old one, but people ask about it a lot, so I brought it back.
So sad that she’s gone. It’s a lovely quote, Van. Mega hugs!
I remember watching her in her Capris with Dick Van Dyke. Quite a change from Ozzie and Harriet, where mom cleaned her home in high heels and pearls. Hugs to you, Teagan. ๐
Yes, she was great as Laura. ๐
Early memories of American TV includes her eponymous show; made me laugh as a youngster more that Lucille Ball or Phil Silvers. Sad but we all go eventually
True enough, Geoff.
So many great memories of her. She will be missed.๐
I agree. Thanks, Kim. ๐
Yes, it’s been unnerving and sobering to watch our stars fall the last many years, some before their zenith (Kennedy Jr, Princess Diana). Appreciate the quote.
Thanks, D. ๐
I used to watch the MTM show as a kid. She has a wonderful brightness about her. I know I’m getting older, Van, as so many of the faces that marked my youth are passing. I have a sad feeling this is going to be the new normal โค
We grew up with those tv characters, it makes the loss so much more personal, D. New normal…because we’ve been around to see so many. ๐
Such a loss to the world. Mary Tyler Moore was a beautiful soul.
She endured quite a few challenges that she kept out of the spotlight, Steph, and maintained that smile. Thanks. ๐
Another who I grew up with, Van. *sigh* Just a reminder how we are no exception to the rule of how to leave this world. May Mary Tyler Moore who gave me so many laughs rest in Peace and laugh all Eternity!!! โค
Nicely said, Amy. ๐ Thanks.
Oh, this is sad news to me as I clicked onto your post Van.. I loved Mary Tyler Moore.. in all the things I saw her in.. A sad day for our world, but one I am sure will be a welcoming homecoming for others.. <3..
We have her immortalized in her many works, Sue. Not all of us get to leave that kind of legacy. ๐ They will be laughing with her for a long time, much like Lucy.
Arrh yes Lucy she was a Ball of laughs too ๐ great woman, so many great talents are passing over right now.. โค must be a great party reunion ๐ ๐
That was a great scene…one of the all time best of any show.
She will be missed.
For sure, George. Many have rated “Chuckles” as the one of the best sitcom episodes of all time. Thanks.๐
She was a woman that made this world a better place to live. Her memories will live on.
That’s for sure, Doc. Thanks. ๐
When I was very young, maybe 7 or 8, I would watch MTM with my grandmother at night, and I wanted to grow up and BE her. I was young enough to think I could be her. She was magical.
She was a successful, 30-something career woman who had a life not dedicated to being “married with children”and she was happy. It was a new formula in the 70’s. The timing was perfect. We all wanted to be her, I think.
Very thoughtful tribute, Van. xo
Thanks, Kelly. I wanted to mention her dramatic role in “Ordinary People”, but that deserved a longer discussion, one I didn’t want to tackle.
I remember my parents talking about that movie and how good it was. I’ll have to check it out!

I am so grateful for her joy and talent and personal beauty. Knowing her existence has ended is sad. I’m glad she left so much behind.
So am I, and there is a lot there, Colleen. Thanks. ๐
wonderful tribute….
๐
๐ Thanks, it was short, but sincere.
perfect actually – and a great light has gone out….
but legacy lives on
I loved her show and really came across her in 1985 when we moved to Texas for a couple of years.. there were repeats of her original show and her later Mary Tyler Moore Hour.. she was beautiful, elegant and understated with her comedy.. delightful woman. thanks Van.
My pleasure, Sally. ๐
Just looking for a place to hop in to say thanks for visiting my place today and leaving a like on Six and Six = Six, huh! I’ve been browsing here. I like your variety. Decided to follow a while.
Thank you, Oneta, and welcome. Jacqueline has introduced us to so many bloggers. ๐

This one really got me. I love her and her work. And from everything I have ever read about her, the good works she did in this life. RIP.
She did wonders for diabetes awareness, a condition she suffered herself. Thanks, Colleen. ๐ ๐ ๐
It was sad to read about Mary Tyler Moore’s passing. I know it can’t be helped and it comes to us all eventually, but it often feels like piece after piece of my childhood is falling away.
So true, Bun. ๐
My heart broke a little bit when I first read the news. And it keeps breaking. MTM was a great woman – a role model for those of us who came of age in the 1970s, and someone who could make learning life lessons fun and memorable. Mary, thank you. RIP
She was surely a fresh voice in the 70’s , Elyse. I saw a bit of her last season yesterday. Still relevant, still funny. Thanks. ๐
Here’s to Mary! May she R.I.P. ๐ฆ โค
๐
Love that quote! She sure was something
For sure. ๐
xx
As sad as it is it made me chuckle just because of “Chuckles bites the dust”…
I know…that episode still makes me laugh.
A class act and lovely woman.
Absolutely. Thanks, Tonya. ๐
