As we approach the season of holiday joy, I can’t help but think about those who are suffering, struggling to survive, for any number of personal challenges.
I have had seasons like that. I remember.
These can be some of the darkest moments, and it’s okay to be sad.
Another kind of Christmas song. Joni Mitchell. From the album “Blue”.
Of course Joni’s is the one. Robert Downey Jr did it justice on an old Ally McNeal episode too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbiutiptei0
Thanks. I forgot about that one. Loved that show, and his role on it. James Taylor did a cover that Joni said was one of her favorites. They seemed to be kindred spirits.
Beautifully said – thank you for sharing 🙂
It’s good to remember those for whom this is not “the most wonderful time of the year”. Thanks for the comment.
Oh, sometimes I wish I had a river to skate away on too.
Me, too. I’ve had some tough holidays over the years. So many unrealistic expectations, I’ve pretty much never met anyone living the Hallmark image, but it’s always been something out there, torturing those of us who think we’re missing something special.
Torture is a good word for how it tugs on those special spots inside, that some call ‘heartstrings.’
I love Joni’s music. My son sent a recent interview of her in her home, about an hour long. I had to watch the entire thing. She is still beautiful, and my son says ‘feisty’. I’d agree…

Just a reminder.
A timely reminder to think and reach out to those in dark places. Thanks, Van!
It matters, Rob. Thanks for noticing. There is a lot of pain when all you hear is that this is the “happiest season of all”.
A reminder appropriate for all the holidays, Van. Empty seats at the table are particularly hard. I love Joni Mitchell, such an emotional voice.
Thanks, Diana. It does take so long to get used to those empty seats, a great point. ❤️
Beautiful, Van. Such an important reminder. Holidays can magnify pain in people’s lives, including mine. Best remedy is always to take the focus off ourselves, and reach out to someone who may be hurting more. That’s what the whole season should really be about. xo
A beautiful solution, Kelly. Not surprised that it’s coming from you. 🎄
